2017 Play it Forward Instrument Donation

August 22, 2017

Play it Forward, in its second year, is an initiative in Springfield led by the Community Music School of Springfield (CMSS) and the Springfield Public Schools (SPS). The goal of the Play it Forward instrument drive is to support band and string programs in elementary, middle and high schools in the Springfield Public Schools. Instruments will be distributed to students participating in SPS/CMSS partnership programs to begin the new school year.

Donations of musical instruments to support the need of expanding SPS music programs throughout the city will be accepted from August 20 through August 27 at CMSS, 127 State Street, and at the following Big Y locations: Springfield (Cooley Street), Longmeadow, East Longmeadow, Wilbraham, Chicopee and Westfield.

CMSS has collaborated with SPS on music programming in the schools. There are more students interested in playing an instrument and not enough instruments available. The collection drive hopes to solve that by accepting instruments that are no longer used by residents in Greater Springfield. With the support of Gerry's Music of South Hadley, the donated instruments will be refurbished and made available for use in the fall.

Donations of wind instruments (trumpet, saxophone, trombone, French horn, tuba, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, flute) or stringed instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass) will be collected throughout the week of August 20-27 at the Community Music School of Springfield. Instruments in any usable condition will be accepted. The drive will not able to accept pianos, organs or drum sets. For more information about Play it Forward, call (413) 732-8428.
