Starting summer on a healthy note

June 05, 2015
Walking School Bus

Two elementary schools will send kids off for the summer on the heels of events meant to remind them of the importance of good diet and exercise habits.

On Monday, June 8th Rebecca Johnson School will spark up a Walking School Bus.   Numerous students are expected to gather at the corner of Lionel Benoit Road and Bay Street at 8 a.m. Joined by parents, community members and others, the group of students is expected to grow with each “stop” along the walking route.

The route will include stops at Oak Grove Avenue, Cambridge and Dawes streets, Girard Avenue, and McKnight and Catharine streets before arriving at the school, 55 Catharine St.

In other healthy news, students at Beal School will play host to “Pat Patriot,” the New England Patriot’s mascot, a dairy cow, and the “Fuel Up” van to celebrate the healthy school environment they’ve fostered all year and the 100th anniversary of the American Dairy Association.

Representatives from the Massachusetts Dairy Farmers and the New England Dairy and Food Council are expected to participate in the field day events, which will include games, song and healthy snacks.  The program begins at 9 a.m. at the school, 285 Tiffany St.

Both events are rain or shine.

June 19th marks the last day of the 2014-15 school year.
