Students recently arrived from Puerto Rico- invited to the State House

January 25, 2018

STEM Middle Academy students Ashanty Rosario and Miguel Torres received a special invitation to lead the Pledge of Allegiance in Boston, during the governor’s annual State of the State Address.

The 6th graders have been invited to attend as representatives of the more than 500 students arriving recently at Springfield Public Schools in the wake of Hurricane Maria. During the event at the statehouse, Governor Charlie Baker highlighted the efforts school districts like ours have made to welcome students from Puerto Rico and how the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is committed to helping. Baker also praised Commerce administrator Tammy Grimes and Duggan educator Evan Christner for their work within the Springfield Empowerment Zone.

At STEM, Miguel and Ashanty are excelling, learning English, and have already made new friends! Ashanty, who arrived just a few days ago from Ponce, Puerto Rico, is excited to play basketball at the school. Miguel, who arrived from Guayama to Springfield this past December, says he is especially enjoying Art class, something he didn’t have access to in his previous middle school in Puerto Rico.
