Guide For Parent Complaints

Springfield Public Schools established guidelines to help improve communications and to better serve parents/guardians. Our goal is to make sure that the school district handles all concerns and issues brought to light by parents/guardians in a manner that is fair, consistent and allows us to help as much as possible.

If you have an issue or concern that you would like to communicate, please follow the guidelines below, which are aimed at improving communication and responsiveness:

  1. Academic issues should first be referred to the student's teacher or counselor. Those are the professionals who are closest to the students and who know the issues best.
  2. Behavior issues should first be referred to the assistant principal or to your student's principal if a school does not have an assistant principal.
  3. If the teacher or counselor cannot resolve the academic issue, or if the assistant principal cannot resolve the behavioral issue, the parent/guardian is to contact the principal for assistance.
  4. After these steps, if the issue has not been resolved through the school principal, it will be documented, and the principal will consult and collaborate with the appropriate Chief Schools Officer for your student's school and the Chief of Family and Community Engagement.
  5. Suspension dispute issues require parents/guardians to follow the Appeals Process. Chief Schools Officers function as an Appeals Officer for these issues.
  6. School Transfers should be directed to Student Assignment Services and will only be considered for the following reasons:
  • Documented Legal (The following documents must be submitted):
    • Restraining Orders
    • Anti-Harassment Orders
    • Police Reports
  • Magnet and/or High School Wait List Request
    • SPS follows an assignment policy whereby the student's legal address determines school assignment for ALL Kindergarten through 8th graders.
    • Exception to this rule are the Magnet School Assignments - If interested you must fill out a “Magnet & High School Wait List” form at The PACE Center: 91 School Street or available online. Your child will then be added to the school of your choice's wait list. PACE will call when there is space available at the preferred school.
    • High Schools - If you wish your child to attend a different high school, you must fill out a “Magnet & High School Wait List” form at The PACE Center: 91 School Street or available online. Your child will then be added to the school of your choice's wait list. PACE will call when there is space available at the preferred school.
