As a political community activist, Maria has dedicated more than 35 years of her life to the enrichment and empowerment of the Latino Community. Her work has included serving as one of the founders of both the Puerto Rican Day Parade and the Heritage Association. She is the former president of the Spanish Merchants Association and is a founder and chairwoman of both the Madres Latinas Organization and the Women on the Vanguard Organization. Maria has served also as the vice-chair of the Springfield Partners for Community Action Inc. and is a former commissioner for the Board of Appeals for the City of Springfield.

Maria holds a Bachelor degree in Human Service from Springfield College. She has worked for the New North Citizens Council for over 30 years and is currently the director of Housing Opportunities for People with Aids.

Maria is known for her favorite saying, “Por el Pueblo, Para el Pueblo, Con el Pueblo” which translates, I am for the Community, I stand by the Community and I am with the Community.
