Dear Springfield Public Schools Families,

It is with a heavy heart that I address the tragic and senseless shooting that occurred yesterday in Georgia, where innocent lives were taken in yet another heartbreaking incident of school violence. Our hearts go out to the families, students, staff, and community members impacted by this devastating event. I understand the concern and anxiety unthinkable tragedies such as these bring to our own community of students, staff, and families.

My highest priority remains the safety and well-being of our children and staff. Just as I am dedicated to students’ academic success and personal growth, I am equally committed to ensuring that they feel safe and secure in our schools. We continuously review and update our safety protocols in close collaboration with local law enforcement. Yesterday’s events are a sobering reminder of the need to stay vigilant and proactive in all our safety efforts.

Here in Springfield, we are fortunate to have strong partnerships with local police and emergency management teams, and we work together to monitor any potential threats. Each of our schools has a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan. Many of these measures are visible, such as locked doors, sign-in systems, security personnel, and metal detectors. However, other safety strategies are less noticeable but equally crucial.

I know that as students see news of school tragedies through social media or other outlets, it may weigh heavily on their hearts. Please know that our school counselors and support staff are here to help them deal with any fears or concerns. If you feel your student needs more support, I encourage you to contact their school counselor.

I believe in the power of unity, and I am confident that we can work together to create a safe, nurturing environment where our children can thrive. Springfield Public Schools remains unwavering in its commitment to the safety, well-being, and success of every child in our care.

With heartfelt gratitude and a shared commitment to safety,

Dr. Sonia Dinnall
Superintendent, Springfield Public Schools
