Conservatory of the Arts Students Showcase College-Ready Skills on Professional Stage

Just a few years ago, Springfield Conservatory of the Arts sophomore Jariel Colon couldn’t play a single instrument. This week, he’ll perform as part of the opening act for 10-time Grammy Award winner and trumpet legend Arturo Sandoval.

Colon will perform at the Hope Center for the Arts in Springfield alongside 19 of his peers, who compose the school’s elite concert band. And this winter, the school’s 20-member auditioned chorus will open for the acclaimed vocal group Take 6.

For music teacher Marcos Carreras, the performances are more than just exciting gigs. “This is what college and career readiness looks like for students with a pursuit in the entertainment industry,” he said.

Carreras began cultivating the auditioned chorus and elite band program when many of their current members were in middle school. Performances throughout the region help the students develop technical skills and stage presence. Working alongside professional musicians provides them with “world-class training,” Carreras said.

Colón, who plays alto saxophone, came to the Conservatory of the Arts without musical experience. “Now I understand not just how to play my instrument, but how to perform with a sense of storytelling,” he said.

For vocalist Olivia Boas, a senior in the midst of the college application process, the experience has buoyed her belief that it is possible to build a career as a vocalist. “My confidence has grown so much,” she said. “I’m building my resume and that’s going to help me get into a great college.”
